A sore throat is one of the most common infant and childhood complaint and can be caused by a cold, tonsillitis or other viral illnesses, such as chicken pox, measles and mumps.
The main parts of the throat that are usually affected are the back of the throat, the tonsils or the larynx (the part of the throat that contains the vocal cords).
Fortunately a sore throat is one childhood complaint that you can usually detect - even in babies. You may be able to see inflammation in the throat, redness of the tissues and feel that the glands are swollen in the neck. Your child will probably find it painful to swallow, they might drool and their breath can smell.
