Common Baby & Childhood Ailments

Earache

Earache is surprisingly common in children but due to the sensitive nature of the ear, it should not be ignored. Earache is normally caused by a viral infection (though it can also be caused by bacteria).

Recognising the signs

More than three quarters of children will have at least one ear infection by their third birthday. The symptoms to look out for include:

  • Pain and fever
  • Irritability
  • Pointing or pulling at the ear
  • A general feeling of warmth or redness around the ear
  • Discharge from the ear

What can you do to help?

Earache can be very distressing for your child. So, to help soothe their pain, why not try a children's medicine which offers pain relief, such as Nurofen for Children*. It targets the source of discomfort and contains ibuprofen which has anti inflammatory properties. What's more, if your child is running a temperature, it can help bring down a fever.

If the problem persists, contact your doctor. They may prescribe antibiotics if the cause is thought to be bacterial, or refer you to hospital if your child has fluid in the ear that needs to be drained away.

*(For babies and children from 3 months and over 5kg. Contains ibuprofen. Always read the label).
